5 Secrets to Learn Spanish 300% Faster

Firstly, know exactly why you are learning the language in the first place. You need to have a clear picture in your mind as to why you’re learning Spanish – whether it’s to gain fluency for a job application, to prepare for a holiday to Spain in one month, or to reach a sufficient conversational level to get by only in Spanish in Mexico. Most students don’t have a very clear picture in their heads as to why they are learning, which they can head towards and measure their improvement by. You will absorb what you learn in your Spanish lessons twice as well simply by having an understanding of where you’re heading. This sounds obvious, but many students do not do this.

Secondly, turn this reason into a clear and qualitfiable goal. If you want to achieve fluency in Spanish for a job application, find out which official exam is required as proof of your fluency. Then pay special attention
to exactly what the exam will require of you. If you are aiming to survive in Spain on holiday in a month, think about exactly what language you will need – like emergency language, restaurant language, small talk, etc – and only learn this language, but master it. If you just want to learn to a decent conversational level, make your goal to be able to talk for one whole day, or week, purely in Spanish.

Now that you know a solid goal to head towards, your mind will naturally focus a lot more during lessons, and pick up the language rapidly that you need to achieve that goal. The subconcious mind absorbs information twice as fast and readily if it has a clear reason to and a solid goal you can visualise.

Thirdly, you should create real time pressure for yourself. Set the exam for six months time, for example. and commit yourself to sit and take that exam in six months no matter what. Promise to yourself that on your holiday you will talk to no English-speakers for a week. If your goal is to become fluent, ask someone you know that speaks fluent Spanish to speak with you only in Spanish for one whole day in a month. Ask them to hold you to your request.

This pressure will focus your mind wonderfully during classes. Notice how different your attitude and speed of learning is to other students with no idea of a good reason why they’re learning, no specific goal or time pressure!

Number four, make sure that you choose the best way for you to learn Spanish. Classes in schools are often not the best way to learn Spanish. in a classroom the pace of learning inevitably slows down to the speed of the slowest students, and the attention of the teacher is split between ten or twenty students.

Actually going to stay in a Spanish-speaking country is the best way to advance fast. The next best way is to find yourself a high-quality home-study Spanish course (there are many very good ones out there today) and study at your own pace, making sure that you follow step 5. Step 5 – Get in at the deep end! Most students don’t take this step, even though it’s the most important step of all if you really want to learn Spanish rapidly to a high level. It is to find a native Spanish Speaker who will meet with you regularly to have conversation at their normal talking speed and in their normal accent. Talk with a native speaker regularly and you will progress beautifully. And very, very rapidly.

The vast majority of students learning Spanish never take this step. They study at a casual pace for years, and then have real trouble understanding native Spanish speakers. Make sure you’re not one of them!
