  1. I went to Florence. They all speak Italian but they are speaking English as well. Approach them and speak what Italian you know. They will speak Italian then. Start of by saying “hi” or “excuse me’ in Itlalian. You will learn some Italian by going to Italy. It may be good to have someone who speaks both to get the grasp. IF you really want a challenge, go to a smaller less touristy town..you are sure to find it there!

  2. Of course Italians are still dominating Florence. Florence is the best city in Italy to learn Italian. They have a university for foreigners so they help you along. Not everyone speaks English there so you will be fine.

  3. It really depends on you- how long will you stay there and whether you’ll be taking courses there, etc.

Any tourist town in Italy speaks a lot of English. Florence has tons of tourists even in the winter! It’s crazy. But Italians are still dominant.

I recommend posting fliers around town (and by the Universities) saying that you’re an American looking for Italians interested in a conversation exchange so you can improve your Italian.

That is how I met many Italian friends and how I am now fluent in the language. KEY- meet friends, they will love you once they see how interested you are in learning Italian.
I was invited to live with some Italian students for a few months (they’re extremely hospitable!).

  4. Florence is amazing! I absolutely loved it! It is beautiful and fun and lots of great people and food… I think that most understand english but I wouldn’t say they all spoke it… There is classic Italy there as well as a bit a modern flare. However, Rome is more english than Florence so I think you will still enjoy it!

  5. i’m italian..the better place to learn italian is Milano.because in Firenze (florence) they not have regular pronunciation

  6. It’s not true that in Florence they don’t have regular pronunciation! Italian language was born in Florence in the IV century.. Dante Alighieri, the father of the modern Italian language was born and raised in Florence! Florence is the best city to go if you want to learn Italian!

  7. Piedmont, Marche and Sardinia are ideal for learning Italian but Tuscany ( Florence) or Rome are not. The reason is simple, in Florence there are too many English speaking people. The result is that while at school you study Italian but outside of school hours you mix with English speaking people and speak only English.

You can see a little more of my own experience on my blog

  8. haha..are you crazy? florence (FIRENZE) isn’t an USA’colony!!
it’s an italian city where is spoken ITALIAN, then, maybe there are a lot of tourist but for sure english isn’t the first language!

and yeh, i think is the best place to learn italian (of course if you go out with americans only you’ll never learn) also because the “real italian” is born from tuscany (where firenze is)… their dialect is the real italian…
and no… Milan hasn’t the “real” pronunciation, they think they are the best in everything, but it isn’t so… “real pronunciation” doesn’t exist in any regions, every place has it’s own pronunciation(or better, accent)…
