When you ask someone why they want to learn Spanish, you will always get a different response. Some just want to learn another language, others for traveling to foreign countries, others to use it in their profession, others to just be able to communicate with other Spanish speaking people. Whatever your reason may be, speaking Spanish is a very big advantage. To learn Spanish, as in any other language I’m sure, is not that simple. It truly takes a lot of commitment and determination. You need to be diligent and never give up. It takes time and effort, as everything in life worth doing does. But it IS possible. It’s about learning words, phrases, sentences and writing. The question would be, why do you want to learn to speak Spanish?

Is it because you want to just know another language, be functional for when you go to another foreign country, or is it because you really have a desire to be fluent in Spanish. Again, everybody has a different reason. So why not start learning as soon as possible. I would say that the number one rule in wanting to learn Spanish is repetition. The more you study, repeat, on a daily basis, the easier it will become, the more you will remember and the better you will become. After all, this is a process and the main thing is that you have a willingness, and desire to get started. When you learn a new word or phrase, repeat it, memorize it, and visualize it everyday. This process will make it familiar to your brain.

Do not be so concerned of how you may sound, that will fall into place the more you practice. Your home or office is an excellent place to help you with learning the Spanish language. Put post-its on things all over your home or where you work, if you’re able to. For each item, write the name of it on a post-it in your first language and beneath it in Spanish, or vise versa. So that every time you visualize that item, you will also see the word in Spanish. Good examples are: the television, refrigerator, sofas, bed, dressers, appliances, etc. Aside from repetition, speak the word out loud to yourself over and over. Realize that at the beginning all this will feel weird, or dumb or crazy to you. All this is understandable, as it is a foreign language to you, but do not let that stop you or be a hindrance to you. Repetition makes perfect, and your desire should be your main reason to continue. Once you learn how to write your words, continue writing them many times over, this will also help you to remember, though as you are writing the word, also say the word out loud so you can hear yourself.

This technique helps you to memorize easier. You do not have to make Spanish difficult, be organized with your lessons, your words, and your phrases. Keep all your Spanish materials together, so when you need them they are all handy and ready to use. By being more organized, you will learn Spanish a lot faster and more efficiently. Do not try to just use the memory for everything you learn, write things down in a notebook. With a notebook you can always go back to words, phrases and sentences you have learned or the notes you have taken. Obviously for reading, practice your Spanish by reading a lot in Spanish. For writing, you need to practice a lot your writing in Spanish also. Watch Spanish stations in television and listening to the radio. Rent movies in Spanish that have subtitles in your first language. Hang around in places where you know there are Spanish speaking people and listen to what they are saying, notice their body language. Associate yourself with Spanish speaking people, or maybe you may have friends that already speak Spanish and encourage them to only speak to you in Spanish.

All this in time will become familiar to you and thus make it easier for you to learn faster. As mentioned earlier, the main reason is to set time aside everyday and be determined and committed to learning to speak Spanish. Do not rush it or become agitated or discouraged, you have nothing but time. And the more time you spend trying to learn, the more you will eventually know. You have to be very persistent in this goal of yours. I am sure you have heard the phrase, “practice makes perfect”.
