You can usually get a free first lesson but after that you have to pay for it… there are free language lessons every once and awhile on B&N site, you can just not buy the book
Start with something free,
such as your local library.
Much of it is on cassette though.
join the army, you can get free access to rosetta stone
It might not be what you were looking for but I’ve collected a huge list of free stuff found on the web to learn German.
